Akshaya Tritiya Significance

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, Akheti somewhere, is a holy day according to Ethics in Hindu. It falls on the third Tithi (lunar day) of Bright Half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month Vaishakha, and one of the four most important days for Hinduism. This also an auspicious day celebrated as Lord Parasurama Jayanti, the sixth incarnation of God Vishnu. On this day Veda Vyas and God Ganesha began to write Mahabharata.

The denotation of the word Akshaya means infinite and that never recedes and the day is believed to bring good luck and success. It is believed that if someone does charity on this day he will get blessings.

Rituals, Custom and Traditions of Akshay Tritiya

Akshay Tritiya festival is devoted to God Vishnu and by Worshiping God Vishnu on Akshay Tritiya eradicates sins and makes that person free of Sadness and also attain the salvation.Akshaya_Tritiya_Significance
In Hindu calendars, some days (Tithi) of the month are not present in counting and some days (tithi in lunar calendars) comes extra, but Akshay tritiya is one and only day which never “absent” from the lunar calendar.

This day is considered fortunate for starting new ventures. The logic is any venture started on this auspicious day continues to grow up and bring prosperity. That’s why; starting new ventures, like opening a business, starting a construction, etc. is performed on Akshaya Tritiya. 

Astrological significance

As per Ethics in Hindu while considering any Muhurta, three lunar days (tithis) are deemed                       auspicious. These popularly called as Sade-Teen Muhurtas.

These Tithis are first Tithi of Bright Half of Chaitra Gudi Padwa (starting of new year), Tenth Tithi of Bright Half of Ashvina (Vijay Dashmi), Third Tithi of Bright Half of Vaishakha (Akshay Tritiya- Parshu Jyanti) and first Tithi of Bright Half of Karttika (Depawali Balipratipada)are called “Sade-Teen (3 ½) Muhurat”.

Astrologicaly it is supposed that, Sun and moon are at their most glorious brightness on these day.

Akshaya Tritiya Significance

On Akshaya tritiya, Panchanga should not be consulted for deriving any auspicious moment, because this day is so auspicious and that cancels all negative influences of difficult planets and Yoga. Often this day is preferred for beginning of new projects. Akshaya tritiya is also a superb day to get married.

Akshaya Tritiya if falls on a Rohini Nakshtra on Monday is considered more auspicious.

Religious significance

Kubera received his wealth and position as guardian of wealth and property with Goddess Lakshmi on this day, by worshiping to God Shiva at Shivapuram.

Akshaya Tritiya is having religious significance, because the Badrinath and Kedarnath temples, which are part of the Char Dham Yatra in Hinduism, are opened for the pilgrims from this day.

It is on this day that poor Sudama, the best friend of Krishna visited Lord Krishna to greet after becoming as the King. Nothing to offer, Sudama takes only Poha (puffed rice) with him and offered to Lord Krishna and never discuss about his poverty though he intends to do so. On his return he found his hut changed into a palace.

And on this day that Dushasana, Duryodhana’s brother from kaurava’s, unveils Draupadi at the royal court where Krishna protects her providing the never-ending veil…

Goddess Ganga (Ganges River) believed to be descended on earth from the heavens on this day.

Do’s and Don’ts

Being Yugadi Tithi, it is significant to performing Meritorious (Punya Karma) Recitations (Japa), Penance (Tapa), Offerings (Dana) Ritual bathing (Snaana), and Sacrifices (Havan), Burnt oblations to fire (Hooma).

But  activities like wearing sacred thread (Upnayana), ending of fast, house construction and house warming (Griha Prawesh) entering thereof, traveling and plantation is prohibited in certain communities.

The religious worth acquired on this day by giving donations is considered never-ending. Gold

Buying Gold on Akshaya Tritiya is supposed to be increase in their wealth and prosperity. Most jewelry stores stock gold in new models for this occasion with “Lakshmi-inscribed” gold coins, diamond jewelry and golden dollars with the pictures of many god and goddesses. There are vigorous campaign conducted by banks, jewelry shops and financial institutions, thus Akshay Tritiya has gained prominence.

Although modern retailers are exploiting the money-oriented push for in the people, that’s why there is a very high awareness about Akshaya Tritiya or Akha Teej. 

It is a good day to perform a “Akshara Abhyasam” to little children’s that’s begin ready to study, as they may get spiritual benefits and special energy that allows to process higher studies. 

Dana (donation) given today is said to give manifold results, giving food to poor, humanity services, Charity activities, will increase your Punnya karma and decrease the Sins. Anna dana – feeding the poor is considered the best donation above all. 

How to celebrate Akshaya Tritiya

Organizing Puja at home is a regular way of celebrating the festival and it may start early in the morning. With Holy Spirit, one must put a Tilak on forehead of Kumkum also have a Tilak to all family members. Light a diya of  pure ghee. Do the shodshopachar puja of God Ganesha,  Godess Maha Lakshmi and Kubera Yantra. Chant Laxmi stotra, Ganesh Stotra, and Vishnusahastranamam.

Worshiping God Vishnu and reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra (1008 names of Vishnu) are measured highly fortunate on this day for prosperity in terms of health and wealth.  

Offer a navaidyam (Food offering) to god and goddess (generally it consists of Sweet items), then give mangal Harti, or Aarti to divines take a Prasad of that offered food.
