Navratri Festival 2014

Navratri is one of the most vital Hindu festivals celebrated all over India, dedicated to Goddess Durga representing purity and power or ‘shakti’.

Nav means nine and Ratri means night, hence Navratri means a festival of nine nights.

Sharada Navratri also known as Maha Navratri or Sharad Navratri and is celebrated in the month of September or October every year. The 10th day after the 9 nights is celebrated as Vijayadashmi [Dussehra] – one of the most important Festivals of India, celebration of victory of divinity over evil. It is also called Dussehra.

The 8th day is very important and known as Durga Ashtami or Ashtami. It is very famous in West Bengal.

During Navratri, goddess Durga is installed in her various forms in specially decorated pendals.Durga Puja

People in every village and cities gather in this pendals and perform ‘Puja’, representing different aspects of Goddess Durga, including Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati.

People Chant mantras, recites Bhajans, folk songs during the Puja rituals during these nine days of Navratri.

Navratri Day First: – 25 September 2014 – Ghatsthapana

Gooddess in the form of Shailaputri [शैलपुत्री ]

Shail [Sanskrit] means mountain and being a daughter of mountain Goddess is known as Shailputri.

Planet Moon, the source of all fortunes to human being, is governed by Goddess Shailputri.  One will receives all blessings by worshiping the goddess in the form of Adi Shakti.

या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ शैलपुत्री रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।।

Navratri Day Second: – 26 September 2014 – Chandra Darshan

Brahmacharini [ब्रह्मचारिणी ]

Worship mantra:

।। या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।।

Goddess Brahmacharini did severe penance [Tapas (Sanskrit: तपस्)] to get Lord Shiva as her husband. She performed hard austerity and due to which She was called Brahmacharini.

Lord Mangal, the provider of all fortunes, is governed by Goddess Brahmacharini.

Navratri Day Third: – 27 September 2014 – Sindoor Tritiya = Chandraghanta  [ चंद्रघंटा ]

Planet Shukra is governed by Goddess Chandraghanta.

Navratri Day fourth: – 28 September 2014 – Varad Vinayak Chaturthi = Kushmanda  [कूष्माण्डा ]

Navadurga

Worship Mantra:

या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ कूष्माण्डा रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।।

It is supposed that goddess has created the universe, Brahmanda (ब्रह्माण्ड). Goddess likes Bali of white pumpkin known as Kushmanda (कुष्माण्ड). Being associated with Brahmanda and Kushmanda this goddess is popularly known as Goddess Kushmanda.

Planet Sun is governed by Goddess Kushmanda.

Navratri Day Fifth: – 29 September 2014 – Skandamata [स्कन्दमाता] – Lalitha Panchami

Goddess Skandamata being sited on lotus flower Skandamata is also known as Goddess Padmasana.

Planet Budha is governed by Goddess Skandamata.

Worship mantra:

या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ स्कन्दमाता रूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम:।। 

Navratri Day Sixth: – September 30, 2014 – Katyayani [कात्यायनी] – Durga Shashti

According to Ethics in Hindu and Hindu texts Goddess Parvati was born in the house of home of sage Katya and due to that Goddess Parvati is also known as Katyayani.

Planet Brihaspati is governed by Goddess Katyayani.

Navratri Day Seventh: – 1 October 2014 – Saraswati Awahan- Maha Lakshmi Puja [Kaalratri Pooja – Durga Saptami or Maha Sapthami] [ कालरात्रि ]

Goddess Kalaratri is the most ferocious [violent] form of Goddess Parvati, She showers with blessings to her devotees with Abhaya and Varada Mudras.

Because of having Shubh or auspicious power within the ferocious form of Goddess Kalaratri is also famous as Goddess Shubhankari (शुभंकरी).

Planet Shani is governed by Goddess Kalaratri.

Navratri Day Eighth – 2nd October 2014 – Maha Gauri [महागौरी] – (Durgashtami Puja/ Maha  Ashtami / Veerashtami);  Saraswathi Puja ends or Saraswathi Visarjan

Mahashtami – Annapoorna Parikrama

Goddess Mahagauri is extremely fair. Due to fair complexion Goddess Mahagauri is compared with the conch, the moon and the white flower of Kunda (कुंद). Goddess beautifies with white clothes only, due to this Goddess Mahagauri is also known as Shwetambardhara (श्वेताम्बरधरा).

Planet Rahu is governed by Goddess Mahagauri.

Navratri Day Ninth – 3rd October 2014 – Saraswati Visarjan – Mahanavami; Siddhidatri [ सिद्धिदात्री ] – (Mahanavami or Durga Navami)

God Shiva named as Ardha-Narishwar due to Goddess Siddhidatri formed herself as a left half of Lord shiva.

Goddess Siddhidatri provides direction and energy to planet Ketu thus Planet Ketu is governed by Sidhidatri

3rd October 2014 – The tenth day of Sharada Navaratri is celebrated as Dasara or Vijaya Dashami in North, South [Some area] and Western Parts of India.
