Gnyana Sarasawti Temple Akshara Abhyasam

Now a day’s numerous pilgrims are coming to Gnyana Sarasawti Temple Basar to perform “Akshara Abhyasam” for their Children. Many people take their offspring to Basar for “Akshara Abhyasam” before commencing formal school education. Special puja rituals and celebrations are held at this temple 15 days before of Maha Sivarathri, starting on Vasantha Panchami and continuing up to 3 days after the festival.  

Akshara Abhyasam is a sacred religious function which is performed on starting of education to the child. Generally, this function is performed at the age of child completes two years and in 3rd year. At this age the mind of the child develops and is keen to learn, this spiritual function called Aksharabhyasam  is performed in the 3rd year as an beginning to start formal education.

1. Vasanta Panchami  is celebrated on the fifth day after Amavasya (No Moon Day) in the Hindu month of Maagha it generally comes in the month of February. Goddess Saraswati is specially worshiped on Basant Panchami so functioning Aksharabhyasam on this day is very auspicious

2. Viyaya Dasami– the Hindu festival of victory- is also considered as the most auspicious day to perform Akshraabhysam- for children at Basar Temple. This is one of the Sumuhurtha in Hinduism.

3. Vyasa Pournima / Guru Purnima  which is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Aashaada. The Guru pornima and birthday of Sage Veda Vyasa so this is a very auspicious day for Akshraabhysam.

4. The Sraavana Purnami / Raakhi Purnima are another important day when people crowd to Basar Sarswati Mandir for performing Aksharabhyasam of their children.

So while are planning to perform Aksharabhyasam for your child at Basar Temple, Just remember the following things:

  • Take at least 1 Kg of rice with you which are to spread on the slate at the time of Aksharabhyasam
  • Take a new cotton towel to put the slate on it. It’s not compulsory.
  • Carry little pasupu (turmeric powder) and kumkham  to use it while performing pooja
  • Other things like slate, chalks, coconut, flowers and flower garland etc are available at the temple premises or you can carry with you.
  • Remember these days are very important for performing Aksharabhyasam and there will be long queue. There may be waiting for hours together in the queue lines. So reach the temple in the early morning, so that you could be in the first slot for performing this function
