World Heritage Sites in India

There are 30 World Heritage Sites in India that are recognized and declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the end of year 2013.These are places having  importance of cultural or natural heritage which fulfills the criteria as described in the UNESCO World Heritage summit, established in 1972.  The Convention is about the protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was adopted on 17 November 1997 following the General Conference of the UNESCO held from 17 October 1972 to 21 November 1972.

 

Agra Fort and the Ajanta Caves are the India’s first two sites enlisted in the Seventh Session of the World Heritage held in 1983.

Over the years, 30 more sites have been inscribed, the latest site inscribed in 2013 is the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Of these 30 sites, 24 are cultural sites and the other six are natural sites.
